Everything changed after Labor Day weekend in 1965. Hurricane Betsy with winds of 120 miles per hour and a storm surge of 11 feet smashed right through the majority of the shacks, barges and houses.

Only 17 structures remained. In the aftermath of the hurricane, the houses had to comply with local building codes. Only those with less than 50% damage were allowed to remain. The Bikini Club was damaged beyond repair, listing 20 degrees to port.

The remaining houses were raised at least 10 feet above the water tide per building code. Eight additional homes were built, most on previous sites, bringing the total to twenty-five houses.

In 1967, radio station WRIZ installed a radio tower on the south side of Biscayne Channel. It later became radio station WRHC. The conspiracy theory going around at the time was that the tower was really a C.I.A. covert operation. It made for good storytelling.
