All Stiltsville Supporters Must Call Senator Bob Graham
The National Park Service (NPS) is out of control. Old inflexible "rules" are being applied all over the country to eliminate private land holdings, and in the NPS' recklessness, cherished cultural and historical assets such as Stiltsville are being wiped out forever.
On September 19, 2000, a very prominent group of Members of Congress joined by other Stiltsville supporters requested the National Park Service to grant Stiltsville either a 1 or 2 year reprieve from the current December 1, 2000 deadline for the houses, to work on a plan that would be in the best interest of Florida, Stiltsville and Biscayne National Park.
SENATOR BOB GRAHAM, however, opposed the idea of a 1 or 2 year "time out" and has not indicated the slightest support for the preservation efforts. Without SENATOR GRAHAM's backing, the historic group of stilt bay houses which date back to the 1920's will be turned over to the custody of the Park Service. The Park Service has admitted that it plans to eventually tear them down, and has no budget or means to support them. On December 1, 2000, the Park will "mothball" the houses, and anyone who does not want to see the houses torn down must protest and object. URGENT attention should be given.
All members of the South Florida community and all other Stiltsville supporters MUST call SENATOR BOB GRAHAM's office NOW, and request/demand that SENATOR GRAHAM support the temporary reprieve. Unless a reprieve is agreed to by SENATOR GRAHAM within the next few days, Stiltsville will be LOST.
SENATOR GRAHAM can be contacted at (305) 536-7293 or at (202) 224-3041.
PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL OTHERS!! TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!!
Please call Senator Bob Grahams office and ask to speak with the Senator staffer who is in charge of Stiltsville. You need to express your concern that Senator Graham has not supported the effort to save this valuable South Florida treasure, Stiltsville. We need Bob Graham to immediately express support HR3033, but time is running out in this session of Congress. So South Florida needs the Senator to press the NPS for a 12 year extension of the current Stiltsville agreement so a reasonable solution can be reached.
If you are calling from Miami-Dade County, please dial (305) 536-7293 and ask to be connected to the Senator Grahams Washington D.C. office since you have a legislative issue to discuss. To call directly, please dial 1 (202) 224-3041. Also, call and ask to speak to "Becky Liner" in the Tallahassee office. You should follow up with a letter to Senator Graham (sample enclosed), mailed to 524 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510, faxed to: (202) 224-2237, and e-mailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
